An estimated 100,000 alligators live in the ponds ,lakes and rivers of South Carolina.
Florida reports numerous pet deaths due mainly to residential development encroaching on their territory
There are some precautions that you can take when out with your pet.
Attacks occur when unleashed pets are permitted to swim or wander along the banks of ponds and lakes especially at dusk, when gators are most active.
When beaching or anchoring your boat, don't let the dogs jump ashore without checking for lurking gators.
Avoid walking near the edge of lakes ,rivers or streams especially those with murky waters.
Never let your dog swim in areas known to be inhabited by alligators.
And remember that alligators are more active in the warmer weather
