Running with your dog

OK, it is time to start working off those holiday pounds and your canine pal
should probably do the same. Dog running partners are much more motivating
than humans. Unless they are sick, a dog will never say I just don t feel like it
this morning and they will probably roust you from your bed even if you don t
feel like it. A dog will not make fun of your lycra or criticize your form. He will
not mind running the same boring route everyday. And, a dog that exercises is a
happy dog all day long.

Before you head out with your new jogging partner, you need to make sure that
he or she is up to the task. The ideal running dog weighs 30-70 pounds and has a
short to medium length hair coat. Giant dogs like Great Danes do not have
appropriate body proportions to support long distance running. And, believe it
or not, Greyhounds are not great for long distance either. They can sprint like the
wind, but long trots are not really their forte. Obvious breeds that cannot become
running partners include small or miniature dogs, those with squashed noses like
Bulldogs and Pugs and short legged dogs like Basset hounds and Daschounds.
Young growing dogs should not be considered a good long distance partner
either. At this early age, it is best to begin training the puppy to obey commands
so he or she will heal, stop, slow down and respect traffic. My dog even
understands right and left . This is very helpful when I decide to make a
sudden turn or if she us out ahead of me. All this obedience training can be done
within a couple of blocks of your home while you are waiting for the dog to
mature. Most are ready for long distance training by the time they are 2 years
old.

Once you have determined that your age and breed of dog is going to make an
appropriate running partner, go see the vet. He or she will check out the dog s
heart, joints, muscle and weight. If all goes well, he ll get a clean bill of health
and you can begin training. If your dog has been enjoying the couch as much as
you have over the holidays, you should probably start very slowly. Start with half
a mile every other day. Increase the distance by 10% each week and give the dog
a day off for every day of running. In no time you will both be enjoying the spring
for an hour or so at a time.

Always keep your dog on a leash. Some people like the waist leash attachments
and others think they are dangerous because the dog could pull you over if he
sees a squirrel or other dog. Know your companion and his habits when making
a decision about what type of leash to use. Stay visible. Use reflective vests,
collars and leashes. Flashing lights around the dog s collar are very effective. If
you must run near traffic, remember that your dog s nose is the same height as
automobile exhaust pipes. Try to keep him away from these nasty pollutants.
Check your dog s paws before and after the run. If you are running on the beach,
where sand can clump between the pads, you might want to do this more often.

As it starts to warm up, be very cautious. Dogs do not sweat like humans. The
dissipate heat through panting and through seat glands in the paws. If the
surface is hot, it will be more difficult for the dog to cool off. Let him run through
puddles, along the edge of the ocean and stick to morning or late evening running
when the roads and beaches are cooler. Carry a collapsible water bowl to allow
your partner to refresh himself frequently and keep is tongue cool. Include your
dog in warm up and cool down walking to help prevent injury.

The most important point to remember is that dogs will run to the edge of the
earth for their human companion and may not complain until an injury is severe.
It is up to us to make sure that we stop immediately if a dog seems exhausted,
sore or hot. If you notice excessive panting, increased salivation, red gums,
vomiting, diarrhea or weakness, stop immediately, get some water, walk home
and consult your veterinarian.

In generally, you probably shouldn t enter running races with your dog. Some
runners are terrified of dogs and under crowded circumstances, leashes can be a
source of trips. However, there are some races that encourage canine
participation, and these can be great fun. As my friend and client ran across the
finish line of our local Reindeer Run with her dog Lulu, she couldn t have been
more proud of her pal and running partner. The trophy they were awarded is
now a symbol of their powerful human-animal bond that drives so many of our lives.

As our Hurricane Katrina response heads into its 20th day, our
Disaster Animal Response Teams continue their quest to rescue
stranded pets while we brace for the potential arrival of
Hurricane Rita. Here's the latest update on what's happening in
Louisiana and Mississippi, along with new photos and a video of
our teams on the ground:

+ Three weeks after Katrina struck the region and the flood
waters rose in New Orleans, our rescue teams are doing all they
can to reach stranded pets in time. We've rescued nearly 6,000
pets and other animals so far. Many animals are in remarkably
good shape, but others are severely dehydrated or have wounds or
chemical burns. For some, we are arriving too late to help.
While individual National Guardsmen and military units have
helped us, the federal government has refused to formally make
animal rescue a top priority.

+ The temporary animal shelter at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in
Gonzales, Louisiana, remains at capacity. To make room for new
rescues, we've transported more than 1,500 animals out of the
facility to other shelters. Our top animal sheltering
professionals are finding the task of running the massive
facility to be the most challenging assignment of their lives.
Despite the federal government's lack of response in helping
with rescues, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Public
Health Service have been a tremendous help at this facility, as
have officials from the state of Louisiana. We're still in need
of volunteers to help with the task of managing what has become
the nation's largest animal shelter!

+ Amid the stress and hardship here, our staff and volunteers
are witnessing the most incredible reunions of pets and their
people - more than 400 so far. At our temporary shelter in
Hattiesburg, Mississippi, a bell near the entrance is rung each
time an animal is reunited with her owner. When that bell rings,
cheers and applause break out through the facility.

+ While our on-the-ground response remains our top priority, we
have begun looking toward the future. Yesterday, the American
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and The
HSUS announced the creation of a reconstruction fund to rebuild
animal shelters damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Each
organization is donating an initial $2.5 million, for a total
of $5 million. We hope to eventually build that fund to at
least $10 million.

Hazards of common Flea Insectides

Imidacloprid (often sold as Advantage)

Imidacloprid is toxic to animal nervous systems. In a test conducted by an imidacloprid manufacturer, it caused tremors in laboratory animals.

Scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences showed that imidacloprid causes damage to DNA (the genetic material in living cells) in laboratory tests with human blood cells.

In a test conducted by an imidacloprid manufacturer, pregnancy loss (miscarriage) was more common in laboratory animals exposed to imidacloprid than in unexposed animals.

Fipronil (often sold as Frontline)

Fipronil insecticide products disrupt hormone function. Scientists at the Universidade Federal do Parana in Brazil showed that an application of Frontline to laboratory animals caused dramatic changes in the levels of two sex hormones and disrupted the animals' reproductive cycle.

Flea-Away Dog Biscuits
The flea repellent in these biscuits is the garlic.
You can also try
mixing a little raw garlic into your dog's regular food.

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup brewer's yeast
1 teaspoon salt
2 cloves garlic, minced
3 tablespoons olive oil or sesame oil
1 cup chicken stock, or beef or vegetable stock
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
Grease two to three baking sheets. In a medium bowl, combine the first four ingredients. In a large mixing bowl,combine the garlic and oil. Alternately, add the flour mixture and thestock into the oil and garlic, beating until the dough is well mixed.Shape the dough into a ball. On a lightly floured surface, roll the doughto a 12-inch circle. Using a two-inch biscuit cutter, cut the dough intorounds. (Or use a cookie cutter with a dog-biscuit shape.) Transfer thebiscuits to greased baking sheets. Bake 20 to 25 minutes, or until thebiscuits are well browned. Turn off the heat and allow the biscuits to dryin the oven for several hours or over night. Store in the refrigerator orfreezer.Makes about 2 dozen biscuits.

Chicken Liver Cookies

2 cups flour
1 cup wheat germ, or 1 cup cornmeal, or 1/2 cup of each
1 egg, lightly beaten
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/2 cup chicken broth
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, or 2 teaspoons dried
1 cup chopped chicken livers, cooked

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
In a medium bowl, combine the flour andwheat germ or cornmeal. In a large mixing bowl, beat the egg with the oil,then add the broth and parsley, and mix well. Add the dry ingredients tothe wet ingredients a little at a time, stirring to combine. Fold in thechicken livers. The dough will be firm. Turn the dough onto a lightlyfloured surface and knead it briefly. Roll the dough to a thickness of 1/2inch, and cut it into desired shapes. Place cookies one inch apart ongreased cookie sheets. Bake for 15 minutes or until firm. Store cookies inthe refrigerator or freezer.

Makes about 24 small, or 15 medium-sized cookies.

Women Majority Prefer Pets to Partners

For those in the pet, pet accessories, and pet services businesses, here's aheads-up for your "behavioral targeting" strategies.

According to a study of pet owners by BizRate Research for Shopzilla, pampered pets are becoming women's priority vs. their partners.

The study reports that 56% of women feel that their pets are more affectionatethan their partner, while only 41% of men feel that way. And 45% of women think their pets are cuter than their partners, twice as many as men. In this study, women said they had a deeper emotional connection with their pets than men did.

Other findings include:
a.. 73% of female pet owners report they are more inclined to date or marry someone who also has a pet
b.. 72% of women pet owners report their pets make them happier than their jobs. (compared to only 60% of the men)
c.. Women are inclined to spend about $50-$100 a month on their pet
d.. 39%% of women pet owners would consider taking their pet to a petpsychic, groomer or therapist
e.. 37% of the female owners will consider a pet funeral (almost twice asmany as men)
f.. The survey saw that 36% of women owners take their pets along with themto run errands such as shopping or going to the hair salon
g.. 70% of female pet owners feel that their pets reflect their personality

In the past 10 years, the pet industry has doubled in size to $34 billion ayear in revenue, according to the American Pet Product ManufacturingAssociation), and the most registered dog breeds are Labrador Retriever,Golden Retriever and German Shepherd says the American Kennel Club.

Pet Safe Insect Killer

Every year hundreds of pets are killed by ingestng insect poison.

Which leaves the dilemma,How do you kill insects without putting your dog or cat at risk?

Mix equal parts baking soda and sugar.Leave in areas were the insects will find it.

While this mixture is not toxic to animals or children,it can cause upset stomachs.Try to discourage pets from licking it!!

It is probably a good idea to place behind a piece of furniture or in a "doggie proof" cupboard.
