Help us help future pet Hurricaine victims

Dear Jane ,
Over the past three days alone, our Disaster Animal ResponseTeams in Louisiana have rescued more than 700 animals --bringing the total number of animals we've helped save acrossthe region to more than 7,000.

While our work in the areas hitby Katrina and Rita will continue for months, perhaps years, ourdisaster teams' efforts have been truly remarkable -- thanks toyour support.

But even as you read this, we know that pets -- animals who, forsome reason, haven't yet made any rescue lists -- remain trappedin their homes or out on the streets. Many remain stranded orhomeless for one tragic reason:Their caregivers, when forced to evacuate, were not allowed totake their pets with them. Government officials and human reliefagencies did not have an emergency plan in place to accommodatepeople and their pets. With your help, we can change this for future disasters: Takeaction NOW and ask your U.S. Representative to support the PetsEvacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act) to ensurerelief agencies plan for pets and that a tragedy of thismagnitude never happens again.https://community.hsus.org/campaign/pets_act_house/u6sxkwrq5ww86x?

Last Thursday, Congressmen Tom Lantos (D-CA), Christopher Shays(R-CT), Barney Frank (D-MA), Don Young (R-AK), and JamesOberstar (D-MN) introduced the PETS Act to ensure that in futuredisasters, people will not be forced to leave behind theirhousehold pets and service animals such as seeing-eye dogs, asthey were in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The PETS Act requires local and state emergency preparednessauthorities to include pets and service animals in theirdisaster evacuation plans. Local and state authorities mustsubmit these plans to qualify for grants from the FederalEmergency Management Agency.

With your help, we have a chance topass this bill and save pets during future disasters: 1. Take Action and urge your U.S. Representative to co-sponsorH.R. 3858, the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act,and do everything possible to get it passed SOON. It will onlytake a minute using our easy online tools.https://community.hsus.org/campaign/pets_act_house/u6sxkwrq5ww86x?

2. Spread the word. Urge your friends and family to contacttheir representatives about this bill. We cannot win unless wehave a large, loud majority urging our legislators to protectpets during future disasters.https://community.hsus.org/campaign/pets_act_house/forward/u6sxkwrq5ww86x?

When a disaster strikes in the future, The Humane Society of theUnited States wants to work hand-in-hand with governmentresponders. Animal rescue is an enormous task, and we can't doit alone. As The HSUS and other animal groups continue to search for, rescue, and shelter animals in Louisiana, Mississippi, andTexas, it's heartening to know that you're standing with us.Please contact your Representative today and urge him/her toco-sponsor and unequivocally support the PETS Act so it can beadopted before Congress adjourns for the year. This law willsave the lives of both pets and the people who love them.Thank you for your swift action and for all you do on behalf ofanimals.Sincerely,Wayne PacellePresident & CEOThe Humane Society of the United StatesP.S. Our teams are continuing to rescue and shelter animalsacross the devastated region. Humane Society of the United States
DISASTER UPDATE: ANIMAL RESCUES CONTINUE IN RAVAGED AREAS
*************************************
Dear Jane ,

As our Hurricane Katrina response heads into its 20th day, our
Disaster Animal Response Teams continue their quest to rescue
stranded pets while we brace for the potential arrival of
Hurricane Rita. Here's the latest update on what's happening in
Louisiana and Mississippi, along with new photos and a video of
our teams on the ground:

+ Three weeks after Katrina struck the region and the flood
waters rose in New Orleans, our rescue teams are doing all they
can to reach stranded pets in time. We've rescued nearly 6,000
pets and other animals so far. Many animals are in remarkably
good shape, but others are severely dehydrated or have wounds or
chemical burns. For some, we are arriving too late to help.
While individual National Guardsmen and military units have
helped us, the federal government has refused to formally make
animal rescue a top priority.

+ The temporary animal shelter at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in
Gonzales, Louisiana, remains at capacity. To make room for new
rescues, we've transported more than 1,500 animals out of the
facility to other shelters. Our top animal sheltering
professionals are finding the task of running the massive
facility to be the most challenging assignment of their lives.
Despite the federal government's lack of response in helping
with rescues, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Public
Health Service have been a tremendous help at this facility, as
have officials from the state of Louisiana. We're still in need
of volunteers to help with the task of managing what has become
the nation's largest animal shelter!
https://community.hsus.org/ct/DpaYJ9S1vmbK/

+ Amid the stress and hardship here, our staff and volunteers
are witnessing the most incredible reunions of pets and their
people - more than 400 so far. At our temporary shelter in
Hattiesburg, Mississippi, a bell near the entrance is rung each
time an animal is reunited with her owner. When that bell rings,
cheers and applause break out through the facility.

+ While our on-the-ground response remains our top priority, we
have begun looking toward the future. Yesterday, the American
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and The
HSUS announced the creation of a reconstruction fund to rebuild
animal shelters damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Each
organization is donating an initial $2.5 million, for a total
of $5 million. We hope to eventually build that fund to at
least $10 million.

To stay on top of everything that's happening in the region,
please bookmark www.hsus.org and be sure to visit it frequently.
We are adding new stories, information, and photos every day.
For all you do for animals, thank you so much.
Sincerely,
Laura Bevan
Incident Commander

Hazards of common Flea Insectides

Imidacloprid (often sold as Advantage)

Imidacloprid is toxic to animal nervous systems. In a test conducted by an imidacloprid manufacturer, it caused tremors in laboratory animals.

For more information about this study, click here and look under acute neurotoxicity.

Scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences showed that imidacloprid causes damage to DNA (the genetic material in living cells) in laboratory tests with human blood cells.

In a test conducted by an imidacloprid manufacturer, pregnancy loss (miscarriage) was more common in laboratory animals exposed to imidacloprid than in unexposed animals.

For more information about this study, click here and look under reproductive toxicity and rabbits.

Fipronil (often sold as Frontline)

Fipronil insecticide products disrupt hormone function. Scientists at the Universidade Federal do Parana in Brazil showed that an application of Frontline to laboratory animals caused dramatic changes in the levels of two sex hormones and disrupted the animals' reproductive cycle.

To see an abstract of this study, click here.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies fipronil as a carcinogen (a chemical that can cause cancer).

To see the list of pesticides that have classified by EPA for their ability to cause cancer, click here.
Fipronil insecticides are persistent. Researchers at Murray State University showed Frontline persists for at least 56 days on pets' skin.

Hemp Supplement for Pets

PROMEGA HEARTS, made from hemp seeds, is a high energy, high protein, high fiber pet food.

Unlike many manufactured pet foods, PROMEGA HEARTS, does not attract pets with sugar, molasses or other unhealthy sweeteners. PROMEGA HEARTS, is 1/3 protein, 1/3 essential fats and 1/3 nutrient-rich fiber, unlike pet foods made with inexpensive meats and grains, PROMEGA HEARTS, contain only minimal percentages of undesirable carbohydrates and saturated fats.

Hemp is a better source of all required proteins than milk, meat or eggs. Hemp is a complete protein source - more balanced & digestible than soy. Hemp Oil is unique with over 90% unsaturated, omega, essential fats. Contains all the essential or omega fats required for cellular health. Contains several times more omega 3 essential fat than any fish. Hemp seeds are rich with vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Contains minimal carbohydrates: Much preferable to grain-based feeds.

Restores tissue elasticity, improves circulation and reduces inflammation. Because PROMEGA HEARTS have a superior balance of "required" nutrients--especially protein--PROMEGA HEARTS are very satisfying allowing you to replace larger amounts of inferior grain-based carbohydrate foods with smaller amounts of PROMEGA HEARTS.

Older animals with diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and many disorders of the digestive system usually respond well to diets containing significant amounts of PROMEGA HEARTS and have a significant increase in energy with less aches and pains. As well, pets using PROMEGA HEARTS always enjoy superior hair and skin with greatly decreased shedding.
